Marc Kennes is a Belgian visual artist who has been active for over 40 years. He trained at various art academies and, during a period when painting was considered “outdated,” consciously chose figurative and expressive art. He was part of a revival of this style, alongside international movements such as the Neue Wilden and Transavanguardia. His work often draws from memory, featuring themes from personal recollections, mythology, and biblical stories. In more recent work, Kennes explores the relationship between painting and music, particularly inspired by composer Dmitry Shostakovich. Just like music, his painting is constructed from layers, rhythms, and tonalities, leading to a strong interplay between image and sound. His work is characterized by emotional intensity, technical layering, and a search for truth in a complex world, where art and music converge in a form of synesthesia.
