In my work, I explore boundaries: the line between life and death, the relationship between nature and culture, between history and the present… often questioning ‘humans as the central point.’ The images in my work usually originate from personal memories or collective memory, connected to contemporary issues.
Matthieu is a walker. From his childhood years with his parents in the countryside around Bruges, he has had a great fascination for nature and for walking. Even now, the typical lanes and farms of Beernem and its surroundings regularly appear in his work, alongside a whole bunch of other impressions he has gathered while walking and traveling.
This tufted figure is like an eternally young reporter exploring the world of the observable. He sees life as a journey, a walk, on the shoulders of millions of years of nature. The current era, with all its news and priorities, is for him an illusion.
Matthieu can’t stick to just one art form; he is a true sculptor. He needs to move from one thing to another, pick up new ideas, and then return again.
